Most guides on AWS startup credits are written for US founders. They assume you have a VC, a Delaware company and an accelerator behind you. If you run a bootstrapped startup in India, that advice doesn’t help.

There is a route made for Indian founders, and it doesn’t need an investor. Startup India lists $5,000 in AWS Activate credits for DPIIT-recognised startups. That compares with $1,000 on the self-serve Founders tier. The full walkthrough is in our guide to AWS Activate credits for Indian startups, and this article covers the essentials.

Why the Startup India route matters

AWS Activate has two main paths. Founders is self-serve and starts at $1,000. Portfolio goes much higher but needs an Organization ID (Org ID) from an Activate Provider, which is usually a VC, accelerator or angel investor.

Startup India acts as a provider for DPIIT-recognised startups. That gives bootstrapped Indian founders access to the Portfolio path with no equity and no investor. Startup India’s page also lists partner offers valued at up to $800,000, plus training content.

Who is eligible

Startup India lists these requirements for the benefit:

DPIIT recognition and the Startup India Org ID

Self-funded or pre-Series B

Founded in the past 10 years

A fully working company website

No previous AWS Activate credits of equal or greater value

Your AWS account must also be on a Paid Tier Plan. A Free Tier account doesn’t qualify, and it is one of the most commonly missed requirements.

Step 1: Get DPIIT recognition

Recognition is free and done online on the Startup India portal. Your company needs to be a Private Limited Company, an LLP or a registered partnership. Sole proprietorships aren’t eligible.

Enter your details carefully. They become the reference point your later applications are checked against, such as your website and incorporation records.

Step 2: Request the Org ID from Startup India

This is where most founders get stuck. The Org ID comes from Startup India, not from AWS. AWS support will usually send you back to Startup India.

Email Startup India from your company address, say you are DPIIT-recognised, include your recognition number and ask for the AWS Activate Organization ID. Some founders also report getting it by calling the support line.

Keep the code private. Codes shared in founder groups are often outdated, and sharing yours can put the route at risk.

Step 3: Get your AWS account ready

Before you apply:

Use your company email on your AWS Builder ID, not Gmail or Yahoo

Add a payment method and move the account to a Paid Tier Plan

Make sure your website clearly says what your product does and who it is for

Step 4: Apply on the Portfolio path

Choose Portfolio, not Founders, and enter your Startup India Org ID. Then add your product details and link your AWS account. AWS says to expect a response in 5 to 10 business days, but Portfolio can take longer because the provider has to be verified.

Common mistakes that cause rejection

AWS doesn’t publish rejection reasons, but these problems are reported most often:

Name mismatch. Your legal entity name differs across your AWS account, website and LinkedIn page. This is very common for Indian startups with a separate brand name.

Weak website. A landing page with only a WhatsApp number doesn’t look like a real product.

Wrong tier. Taking Founders when you could have used Portfolio.

Free Tier account. No payment method or paid plan.

If you were already declined, our guide to the common causes of AWS Activate rejection walks through how to work out which one applies to you.

Think before taking the smaller package

AWS pays only the difference if you apply for more credits later, and you generally need to stay with the same provider. So if you take $1,000 on Founders now, you may find it harder to claim the larger amount afterward. Our comparison of AWS Activate Founders vs Portfolio explains how the choice works.

Also check whether an incubator or accelerator you belong to is an Activate Provider. Some offer bigger packages than the $5,000 from Startup India.

Apply when you’re ready to spend

Credits expire, usually within one to two years. If you’re still prototyping, waiting a quarter can get you more value. And plan for the bill after the credits end. Teams building on free credits often over-provision, and the first full invoice can come as a shock.

Final thoughts

If you’re a DPIIT-recognised startup, check the Startup India route before applying for anything else. The steps are simple: get recognised, request the Org ID, prepare your account and website, and apply on Portfolio.
